Has anyone experimented with the 'hollow face' optical illusion? I saw
an item a few years a ago, a pyramid with a egyptian head inside - the
eyes seem to follow you around.

Here are two links to pique your interest.

Make sure you see the dragon video.

I think this illusion could have some application to the world of fine
art and public sculpture - but I have never seen it used ?

I think the first one I saw was at Disney Land. The Haunted house had
some Portrait Busts which were actually molds with below lighting. I
have used the principle when working on negative plaster molds,
especially reliefs, where it is often difficult to see the results of
your work until you do the positive cast. Because the illusion is
reversed horizontaly, I also snap a digital photo, and flip it on the
computer with a photo editor. This is especially useful with a
portrait, because it represents the left side of the face on the left
side where it is supposed to be. A very useful tool, and it's also fun!
Thanks for the links Gary.

In Ephesus, Turkey
at the house of Virgin Mary
there is a full size statue of her
in reverse.

It is outdoors, so no special upward illumination is available
but it works.
